The "Jap" Tower

This was the aircraft control tower built by the Japanese during WWII. By '75 the shelter on top was long gone. The tower was used as a platform for a very powerful  xenon light. The light was about the size of a 25" console color TV. It was so strong it was considered a weapons system, and tower clearance was required before it could be employed. The light was powered by what looked like a VW engine mounted one floor below. Some of us decided it would make a great "Bat Signal." Like in Batman and Robin.  So we drew a template and covered the back side with tin foil to protect it from the light. The template was mounted in a wooden frame that would place it about 2 feet in front of the light. When all was ready I pointed it at a big puffy cloud and switched it on to low power. Before we could see if it was working, the whole thing burst into flames.  We knocked the burning frame off the tower shut down the light and never said a word about the incident.
